The Brooklyn Nets’ rookie guard is making quite an impact on the team but isn’t getting enough recognition.
With Kyrie Irving only playing road games and Kevin Durant out due to an injury, Cam Thomas has played an effective role in the team’s offense.
Over the past five games, the 27th overall draft pick averaged, 20.8 points, 4.2 rebounds, and 2.2 assists, despite averaging 9.8 points, 2.6 rebounds, and 1.3 assists in the season.

Not impressive? Well, on February 9th, he tweeted a graphic of the number of games rookies have scored more than 20 points since January 1 and throwed shade by adding “🥱🤫”. He’s the leading rookie with six games, followed by Detroit’s Cade Cunningham and Orlando’s Franz Wagner, both with four games. The graphic also says he’s the first Nets rookie with 50+ points over two games since Keith Van Horn.
Since that tweet, Thomas has had four additional games with 20+ points. Both Cunningham and Wagner have one game.
What’s funny is that Cunningham is in serious consideration for Rookie of the Year while Cam isn’t getting any coverage. He’s not even mentioned in the Kia Rookie Ladder which I think is DISRESPECTFUL.
Now I’m not saying that he should be Rookie of the Year, I just think he needs to be talked about more. Yes, there’s a lot of news surrounding the Nets, and I get that, but it would be nice to see Cam in more headlines.
This kid also has the clutch gene. He’s hit two game-winners this year alone. One in overtime against the Spurs and a 29-foot ice-cold DAGGER, late in the fourth quarter in a comeback win against the Knicks.
“We went to him, a rookie carrying the load in a rivalry game like this in the Garden, it shows what’s inside of Cam,” Nets head coach, Steve Nash said after the Knicks game. He finished the game with a team-high 21 points, 16 in that quarter alone. Like I said, A. WALKING. BUCKET.
He performed really well in NBA Summer League too. As the leading scorer with 27 points per game, he was named to the Summer League First Team and was the Summer League MVP with Davion Mitchell.
Cam Thomas is clearly talented and has done great things for the Nets but it’s unfortunate he’s not getting the attention and recognition he DESERVES.
