Crowdsourcing: Audience Definitely Matters

I teamed up with Elyse for the Scavenger hunt, and personally, I found it challenging, but it was worth it. The main objective of the activity was to gather as much information from the Seton Hall community by asking questions that showcase their favorite things about Seton Hall and South Orange. Elyse and I both decided to do 4 questions. My questions were: eating spots, school spirit, fanatic fans, and a freestyle topic of reasons why they chose Seton Hall.

To get the word out, Elyse and I posted it on my Instagram stories. I also made a tweet thread on my personal Twitter account. I didn’t get as many responses as I hoped, but those who did respond gave me awesome answers.

As a foodie, I love getting food recommendations so I asked “what’s a go-to spot for food?” I got amazing responses like the Village Trat, BGR, and Titos. I love all these spots but my favorite response was Jackie and Son & Toro Loco. I haven’t been to either of them yet, but I look forward to checking them out in the future.

I wanted to see how others represent our school. Most of the answers I received say they represent Seton Hall by supporting our sports teams or by wearing SHU gear, which is always important! The response that stood out to me was from an alumnus, who graduated more than a decade ago, still shows his love for Seton Hall! Go, Pirates!

Speaking of sports teams, I asked people their take on the Men’s Basketball season so far. As a close follower of the 2020-2021 Men’s team, I can say with 100% certainty that it’s been wild. There were some excellent responses, but there was one that perfectly summarized the season:

Everyone has their own reasons why they chose Seton Hall: the programs they offer, quality education, our sports program, etc. But the response I enjoyed was Seton Hall’s small campus community vibe.

My partner, Elyse did a phenomenal job crowdsourcing and she received great responses!

Our social media class shared interesting answers too. One of the tweets I liked was from Allison who said that Pirate’s Cove used to be a bar! It would’ve been nice to have a drink after a long day of class. Catherine said that there are secret tunnels the connects Boland Hall to the other dorms on campus. Who knew? Mariana found out that Andre Braugher, an actor who plays one of my favorite characters on the hit sitcom Brooklyn Nine-Nine, lives in South Orange! Laura recommends hiking the South Mountain Reservation. It’s lovely to be one with nature, so I’ll definitely check it out. Heaven said that the 4th floor of Jubilee Hall has the best view, and I have to agree.

Though it was a challenge to actually get feedback and answers, as I don’t have that big of a following, I definitely had fun conducting a crowdsourcing campaign and reading the responses I did receive. As an aspiring journalist, this was an activity that helped me to fully grasp the function and advantages of crowdsourcing. I realize how vital crowdsourcing can be, and that it can be a huge asset for PR professionals and journalists alike.
