Social Media has come a long way from its original intention, to connect family & friends over the internet, but now it’s where the majority of the younger generation gets their news and information.

By getting and sharing information on social media like Twitter, it has drastically changed the journalism field. Journalists can go on Twitter to get information on breaking news stories. Instead of sending a journalist overseas to cover a siege or coup, ordinary people can help provide information. Journalists can go on Twitter, and reach out to those posting about it. This can also be a challenge with breaking stories since the information you are getting might not be right, so it is very important to verify and update your news story as soon as possible. While this might be a challenge, it’s better than waiting to read it in tomorrow’s newspaper. This is not to say that it’s bad to read the newspaper, but the younger generations hate waiting and prefer to get their news instantly.
As sad as it might seem, print journalism is dying. By the time you get a copy of a newspaper, the news is already old. With social media, you get your news and information, instantly. This is why the younger generations opt to go on social media sites (Twitter, Facebook, Instagram, Snapchat etc.) to get their news, rather than read a newspaper with “old news”. Some might find this to be a bad thing, but as of now, this is the ideal way to go about getting recent and updated news.
